Dear Mr. Stubblefield,

This letter is to summarize the terms of our settlement over the phone on Aug. 30 and 31, to deliver the manuscript (enclosed) in its current state, and to submit an invoice for payment as agreed. You have asked for my opinion on the ARI-Reisman matter. I have ceased making statements of any kind, and have never made any public statements, on this matter. As I understand your position, you do not want to risk my coming out later in support of the Reisman's after you publish my article. Therefore you chose not to publish the article and you offered a settlement.

From my standpoint, two editors of TIA have invited me to submit this article for about 4 years, sometimes as frequently as every other month. Despite severe time limitations, I finally agreed. The paper is now 100% researched and 90% written. Paul Blair approved of the manuscript as it was on about Aug. 11. I agreed with his suggestions for improvement, and I made those changes in the next two weeks. I was at the stage where I needed a decision from you as to whether the article was to be cut to 6000 or 3000 words, which was to be my next step. That is the current state of the manuscript.

As I understand them, the terms of the agreement are as follows. TIA will pay me full payment for the shorter 3000-word article, namely, the sum of $900. TIA has first rights to publish the article until the date specified in the contract, January, 1996. After January, 1996, both parties have the right to publish it in any form. Both TIA and the author mutually must give editorial consent to the final version should TIA decide to publish or circulate the article in any form.

If these terms are acceptable, please remit the amount below within ten days.

Sincerely,

Richard F. Sanford
